[manjaro] goodbye yaourt, hello yay

February 22, 2019 Leave a comment

Problem
Under Manjaro I’ve used yaourt so far to install AUR and even other packages. I’ve read there are problems with yaourt but it worked so well. However, I just heard that yaourt is not maintained any longer. So what to use instead of yaourt?

Solution
yay is very similar to yaourt in its functionalities and usage, thus it seems to be a good replacement.

I only had one issue, the output was not colored, but it was easy to fix. From the FAQ: “make sure you have the Color option in your /etc/pacman.conf“.

I even removed yaourt to force myself to use yay: “yay -R yaourt“.

yaourt was great and I’m thankful for its developers.

[manjaro] installation fails, unknown public key

January 17, 2018 Leave a comment

Problem
I couldn’t update a package due to the following error:

==> Validating source files with sha256sums...
    gcc-7.2.1-20171224.tar.xz ... Passed
    gcc-7.2.1-20171224.tar.xz.sig ... Skipped
    isl-0.18.tar.bz2 ... Passed
==> Verifying source file signatures with gpg...
    gcc-7.2.1-20171224.tar.xz ... FAILED (unknown public key BBE43771487328A9)
==> ERROR: One or more PGP signatures could not be verified!
==> ERROR: Makepkg was unable to build mingw-w64-gcc.
==> Restart building mingw-w64-gcc ? [y/N]
==> --------------------------------------
==> ==> ERROR: unable to update

Solution
I asked this on reddit and /u/SuperGrip kindly provided the solution:

This is a common issue when an apps key is not included in the ArchLinux Keyring, to solve this issue you can add the key manually by running the following command: gpg --recv BBE43771487328A9

For further information check the package comments on the AUR site. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mingw-w64-gcc/

[manjaro] install an older version of a package (downgrade)

January 5, 2016 Leave a comment

Problem
There is a problem with the newest version of a package and you want to go back to the previous version. How to do that?

Note: currently (January 2016) there is a problem with the newest truecrypt package (truecrypt 7.1a-3), you cannot mount any volume, so it is suggested to install version 7.1a-2.

Solution
Visit the official archive site at https://archive.archlinux.org/ , enter packages/, and download the package with the desired version. The extension of a package is .tar.xz .

How to install it from the file system:

sudo pacman -U package.tar.xz

However, if you update all your packages with “yaourt -Syua“, this older package will be upgraded. To prevent that, edit the file “/etc/pacman.conf” and put the name of the package in an ignore list. My ignore list looks like this:

IgnorePkg   = vuze truecrypt

[manjaro] ignore package update

August 9, 2015 1 comment

Problem
I installed vuze from AUR but vuze keeps updating itself. When a new version appeared in AUR, I tried to update the vuze package but it failed due to file conflict. Since vuze is actually up-to-date, there is no need to update it from AUR, and I don’t want to see any messages from the package manager either to update this package.

Solution
Put this package on an ignore list and thus the package manager won’t want to update it.

Open /etc/pacman.conf and add this line:

IgnorePkg = vuze

You can also specify several packages separated by a space. Both pacman and yaourt will ignore this (these) package(s).
